Who issues the permit
Fresno's Building and Safety Services Division issues permits for new structures, and it's where to ask whether your wall needs one. When it does, we file the permit and handle the paperwork.
Want a brick garden wall that won't lean or crumble? We build it on a sound footing and cap it so weather runs off.

Brick wall installation in Fresno means building a garden wall of brick on a brick or concrete foundation, giving your yard a boundary or privacy wall that holds up to sun and rain on both sides.
Most people who call about a brick wall want a boundary or privacy wall they won't have to rebuild, often where an old fence has given out or the ground isn't level. The price moves with the wall's length and height, the design, the brick you pick and how much footing work your ground needs. The schedule mostly turns on the weather, any permit the job needs and when the brick arrives. I'll come out, look at the spot and give you your own price in writing.
A pier and panel wall runs thin brick panels between sturdy brick piers. Brick guidance calls it economical and easy to fit to uneven ground, so it's worth asking about first if your yard isn't level.
Brick guidance warns that on an exposed garden wall, any flaw in the work can lead to decay and sometimes failure, so the builder matters as much as the price. Satisfaction guaranteed on every job.
We've been in business since 2013, after I spent years running crews on big commercial jobs. I write the estimate myself, and our own crew builds the wall with a lead mason on site.
A garden wall takes the weather on both faces and the top, so the footing and the cap matter as much as the brick. Our crew digs out and sets the foundation first, because a wall is only as straight as what it sits on. Then the lead mason lays the brick to a line with a mortar mix made for outdoor work, tooling each joint tight so water runs off instead of soaking in. Brick guidance calls for the coping, the cap course along the top, to stick out past both faces with a drip underneath so rain falls clear instead of running down the brick, and that's where we slow down. We clean the brick and haul off our mess before we call it done.
If you'd like natural stone on the piers or the cap, that's stone masonry, and we build both. Years down the road, when the mortar joints start to wear, brick pointing refills them and keeps water out without tearing the wall down.

On a corner lot, the city requires a visibility triangle no higher than three feet, so drivers can see past it. We lay out a corner wall with that in mind.
Where your lot naturally sits above the sidewalk or the next lot, a retaining wall and fence combination can reach seven feet, measured from the lower side, with the city's approval.
We're based in Fresno and build in the cities around it, including Clovis, Madera, Selma, Sanger and Kingsburg. Outside Fresno, we file any permit the job needs with that city or the county.
Send the form and we'll get back to you within one business day to set a time. I'll come out, look at where the wall goes and give you a written price, free and with no obligation.
Ballpark numbers are fine. They tell me how much footing and brick we're talking about, so the visit can go to your questions instead of basic measuring.
A corner lot carries the city's visibility limit, so knowing up front helps me sketch where the wall can stand full height before I arrive.
A few phone photos of the grade show me whether a pier and panel wall or a retaining wall and fence combination makes sense for your yard.
These photos show brick bonds, pier and panel layouts, caps and stone accents you can point to when we talk about your wall.
Here's what homeowners usually ask me about height rules, brick choice, cost and who can legally build a garden wall.
Past the front yard setback, the city allows a fence or wall up to six feet high. A setback is how far back from the street a structure has to sit, and in established neighborhoods you go by the one most houses on your street already keep. Corner and sloped lots have the extra limits covered above, and I'll measure it all at the estimate.
Only if it meets the SW grade, the rating for brick that faces severe weather, and brick guidance says used brick generally won't. Out in the open, brick that isn't up to it can crack and crumble long before the wall should. If you've found some you like, I'll check it's fit for outdoor work before you buy it.
Brick and masonry work in Fresno usually costs about $11 to $30 per square foot. That's the going rate around here, not a quote, and where a wall lands in it depends on the choices covered above. I'll come out and give you a written price for your wall.
Only a very small one. California lets someone without a contractor's license take on work up to $1,000, and only when the job needs no permit and they employ no one. Anything larger calls for a licensed contractor. We're licensed and insured, and our own crew builds the wall.
New brickwork in extreme heat is kept damp and then covered. When the day's average temperature tops 100°F, the industry's masonry specification calls for fog spraying the new wall until damp at least three times a day for three days, then covering it to hold the moisture. Fresh mortar needs that water to cure hard, so expect hoses and covers during a heat wave.
