What a stone veneer job involves

Stone veneer installation in Fresno means fixing a layer of real or manufactured stone to a wall so it looks like solid stonework, and at Mastercraft Fresno Concrete and Masonry we make sure the wall behind it is sound and dry before any stone goes up.

Most calls start with a house front that looks flat, a stucco wall that's cracked and tired, or a block wall that's solid but plain. The price moves with how much wall you want covered, the stone and corner pieces you pick, how many windows and edges it wraps around, and whether the wall behind needs work first. The schedule turns on that same wall prep and on whether the job needs a permit, which we file with the right office when it does. I come out, look at the wall with you and give you the price in writing.

  • I write the estimate myself

I come out, look at the wall with you and write the estimate myself, so the person pricing your job is the one who knows what the wall underneath needs.

  • Our own crew sets the stone

Our own crew does the work, with a lead mason running it on site, so there's one person answerable for every course, corner and joint from start to finish.

  • A straight answer on small fixes

If fixing a section of stucco or covering a smaller stretch of wall will get you what you're after, I'll tell you that instead of selling you the whole house.

How we set stone on your wall

Stone on a wall is only as good as what's behind it, so I look hard at the wall and the water barrier before any stone goes up, and on older stucco that can mean fixing the wall first. Then our crew puts up the water barrier, and the usual detail behind adhered stone is two separate layers of house wrap or building felt, taped at the seams, with a drainage mat standing in for one layer where code allows so the wall stays drier. Over that goes metal lath and a scratch coat, a rough base coat of mortar the stone can grip. We set the stone, fill and tool the joints, and clean up so all you're left with is the wall.

Stone often goes on walls we build ourselves. If you want a new yard wall, we can lay it in concrete block and face it in stone as one job. When stone wraps the base of a house or an addition, the foundation block wall underneath has to be right first, because the stone carries none of the weight and depends on what it's stuck to.

Permits and licenses for stone work in Fresno

The city issues the permit

In Fresno, the city's Building and Safety Services Division issues building permits, and the state building code requires owners who build, alter or repair a building or structure to get one.

How an application goes in

Applications go to the city's permit counter with plans that clearly show the scope of work or a completed affidavit form. When your job needs a permit, we file it and handle the paperwork.

A state license for contractors

California's Contractors State License Board licenses home improvement contractors, whether they work full time or part time. We're licensed and insured, and our own crew does the work on every job.

The $1,000 limit on small jobs

Someone without a license can take on minor work under California's $1,000 limit, but only when the work needs no permit and they employ no one on the project.

Get a written price for your stone wall

Send the form and we'll get back to you within one business day to set a time. I come out, look at the wall and give you the price in writing, free and with no obligation.

  • Send photos of the wall

A couple of photos of the wall and the area you want covered show me where we're starting, so we can get more done in the visit.

  • Tell us if it's stucco

Stucco is the first thing I want to know about, because it decides whether the wall needs work before any stone goes up and that has to be in the price.

  • Mention a historic home

If your house is a designated historic property, tell us at the estimate so we can plan for it from the start instead of finding out halfway through.

Questions about stone veneer in Fresno

Straight answers to the questions that come up before stone goes on a house or yard wall, from stucco and structure to cost.

Can stone veneer go over the existing stucco on my house?

Usually not as it stands. One masonry trade article advises against adhered stone over existing or damaged stucco, because there's no knowing what shape the fasteners and backing behind it are in. It says adhered stone does work once the wall is rebuilt to carry it. I'll tell you at the estimate what your wall needs.

Is manufactured stone veneer part of the wall's structure?

No. Adhered manufactured stone is a lightweight product made from cement-based materials and aggregates to look like natural stone, and it's non-load-bearing, so it dresses the wall but carries none of the house's weight. That's why the wall behind it has to be sound on its own, and it's where we start.

How much does stone veneer installation cost in Fresno?

Stone veneer installation in Fresno usually costs about $2,700 to $10,500 per project. That's the going range in the area for a whole job, not our quote. Where yours lands depends mostly on how much wall you cover and whether the wall needs work first. I'll give you your own price in writing after I see it.

Should I use adhered or anchored stone on my wall?

Let the wall decide, not taste. Stone industry guidance says the project details, the structural support, the expected load, the stone itself and the local climate should settle the choice between adhered and anchored stone, and that preference isn't the right reason. When I propose one, I'll tell you which of those details drove it.

How long does stone veneer last on a house?

Put up the way the industry's installation guide recommends, manufactured stone is meant to perform for decades. The same guide says problems usually come from workmanship in the field, and trade guidance calls for details like keeping the drain edge at the bottom at least four inches above the ground. Our work comes with satisfaction guaranteed on every job.

Can I pressure wash stone veneer?

No. A masonry trade article says pressure washing adhered stone veneer is not an option, ever, so keep that in mind when it comes time to clean it in later years. If your stone needs attention down the road, call us at (559) 319-0148 and I'll come take a look.
